D is for Depression

D is for Depression and Anxiety (Unstrange Mind blog). Studies of depression and anxiety amongst autistics are still in their infancy, and a key concern raised is whether the prevalence of depression in the autistic community is biological or situational in cause, or both. True autism acceptance would make a significant positive contribution towards alleviating situational depression.  Depression may be more difficult to detect in autistic people, due to seemingly-unchanging facial expressions, different methods of emoting, and challenges with identifying and describing moods- hence her recommendation for developing separate diagnostic criteria.
